Intro

My CV will tell you that I’m an italian (you may have guessed it from the nice picture of my hometown) Telecommunications & Information Engineer and PhD candidate at Tampere University in image compression. By the way, check out my work here.

It will also say I worked for 3 years as a Research Scientist in X-ray imaging, where I turned company and customer needs into scalable solutions based on image processing.

As a matter of fact I am a people-centric technologist with deep roots in multimedia. My sweet spot is computational imaging and computer vision. I love collaborating across R&D, product, and support to solve hard problems, explaining the “why,” unblocking the “how,” and ensuring solutions stick. Inside and outside the office, I’m the “let’s loop everyone in” type: I speak at meetups, run and organize workshops, and enjoy supporting teams and customers. When I’m not building imaging pipelines or endlessly talking with someone, you’ll find me digging into IT and gaming, or recharging with electronic music, soccer, and the latest sci-fi/fantasy series.

Work

I am, on paper, a Telecommunications & Information Engineer and a PhD candidate at Tampere University in Lossless Image Compression Algorithm Development, which is just a long-winded way of saying I'm "technically" good at making pictures take up less space. If you do not believe it I published 4 peer-reviewed paper on the subject that can prove you wrong.

I also spent three years as a Research Scientist in X-ray imaging in the Algorithms team at Detection Technology, basically processing, optimizing and removing artifacts from all the images I could lay my hands on. I also dabbled in biological image processing as a research assistant at the Finnish Hub for Development and Validation of Integrated Approaches (let's just call it FHAIVE for short).

The years spent working in Italy? That was a wild ride. I've been everything from an RF designer to a Network Engineer, a Technical Instructor and even a NOC operator. You know, the kind of person who knows exactly what to do when the internet goes out at 3 AM.

During all this time though, apart from spending countless hours in front of a display, I've learned how to interact with people and, more importantly, how to talk with people. I can proudly say I've been elected 3 years in a row as the student representative in my European PhD network. I've always been a great fan of human interaction, and all my experiences gave me the opportunity of collaborating with the most diverse set of people. This taught me how to work and communicate across cultures and disciplines, reading the room, adjusting the tone and reading in between the lines. I can safely say that I recharge around people, and I’m at my best when I’m around someone.

About

I'm a 33-year-old who, for the better part of three decades, was a full-time Roman; navigating ancient cobblestones, missing delayed buses and surviving a chaotic life with a certain flair was my go-to. About 10 years ago, I decided to swap the Colosseum for the cold, and I've been successfully faking it as a Finn ever since. My life is a delightful mess of cultural confusion, where I'm constantly trying to remember if I'm supposed to be sipping espresso or enduring a sauna session. The Roman in me still dreams of summer heat or chaotic football games at the stadium, but the new, faux-Finnish me has learned to appreciate the subtle art of not complaining about the weather. So, if you're looking for someone who brings a little bit of ancient history and a lot of dry humor to the table, you've got the right guy.
